BruxellesThe Canadian cellphone market will soon be open to foreign companies. The government announced its intentions in this regard in the Throne Speech delivered on Wednesday in Ottawa.

Details of the new policy will likely be given at the same time as the Budget, on Thursday.
Analysts believe this policy will allow companies such as US giant Verizon to compete in Canada with established firms such as Bell, Rogers and Telus.
Detractors of the current system claim that the lack of competition has caused prices to remain artificially high, in addition to curtailing innovation.
Others see a breach that could allow foreign entities to eventually own radio or television networks in Canada.
