Georgia studies Québec’s healthcare approach

In early July, Dr. Rhonda Medows, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Community Health, visited Montréal and Québec City to familiarize herself with the provincial healthcare system. At a meeting with Yves Bolduc, Minister of Health and Social Services, discussions focused on the similarities and differences between Québec’s and Georgia’s systems and on bilateral public health challenges.

During her five-day stay, Dr. Medows visited Montréal’s Jewish General Hospital and Verdun Hospital, in addition to the Montréal Heart Institute, where new operating rooms are set to open in the near future. Accompanied by her husband, Dr. Wayne D. Wells (Chief Medical Officer with Harris Quality Consulting), Dr. Medows also attended presentations on the role and functioning of key Québec institutions, including the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS), the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal (ASSSM), the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) and the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

Dr. Medows’ visit stemmed from an invitation extended by Québec Premier Jean Charest during a breakfast organized by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue in conjunction with the Bio 2009 international conference held in Atlanta in May. Québec Government Office in Atlanta helped prepare the agenda for the visit.

Developing its relations with the US is one of Québec’s key international action priorities. The Québec government has maintained a presence in Atlanta since 1978.
