Yvon Vallières to head the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly

The President of Québec’s National Assembly, Yvon Vallières, was elected President of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie or APF in French) at the 35th session of the organization held in Paris on July 6.

“Both for Québec’s National Assembly and for Quebecers, the Francophonie is not only a cause, but also a tool for solidarity with others. We are working to give our Assembly the important role it deserves to the greatest benefit of the people we have the honour of representing,” declared Yvon Vallières during his nomination speech in the auditorium of the Palais Bourbon.

Mr. Vallières summarized the objectives he intends to pursue during his term, which specifically include strengthening the political influence of the APF with the leaders of the Francophonie and consolidating the cooperation programs that it implements. He also wants the APF to promote the interests and aspirations of French-speaking people with the executive bodies of the Francophonie and pursue its double mission of vigilance, specifically by taking positions in political crises and supporting constitutional states and democratic institutions through cooperation programs.

Furthermore, as concerns the French language and cultural diversity, he intends to rally members of parliament in French-speaking countries to implement the Convention on the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, adopted by UNESCO in 2005.

Created in 1967 in Luxemburg, the APF is the consultative assembly of the International Francophonie Organization. It includes more than 70 national parliaments and governments that share French as their principle language. Québec’s National Assembly has been a full member of the APF since 1975 and has played an active role within the organization in recent years.
