The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is celebrating ten years of cooperation with the Belgian police this year. In 1999, SQ representatives met Belgian police representatives during an international forum on security and democracy held in Naples. In 2000, as part of its preparations for the Summit of the Americas, held in Québec City, the SQ decided to call on international expertise in law enforcement. Among other experts, it contacted the Belgian police officers met the previous year.
Division superintendent David Yansenne, commanding officer for the Polbruno area, was one of the pioneers in building dialogue between the SQ and the Belgian police.
These meetings were an opportunity for the two organizations to discover a number of similarities. Both police forces were in the midst of a reform process, both wanted to implement a neighbourhood police approach and both were striving for excellence in police duties. Given these shared objectives, they have signed formal agreements in the latter two areas since in 2004.
