On Saturday July 6th, an unmanned, 72-car freight train carrying shale oil derailed and plummeted into the heart of Lac-Mégantic, a close-knit town of 6,000 people, located approximately 155 miles east of Montreal. Currently, authorities have found the remains of 33 people, with 17 missing and presumed dead. The explosion and resulting fires destroyed approximately 30 businesses and homes, causing roughly 2,000 residents to evacuate.
The derailment has thoroughly shaken the town of Lac-Mégantic, and the Canadian Red Cross is working to provide aid to evacuees and support to the large number of displaced families and residents. To help the victims Lac-Mégantic, you can donate online via Red Cross Canada.
