The Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB – Brussels Transport Company) has confirmed the acquisition of 65 new FLEXITY Outlook trams. The order boosts the total number of Bombardier trams operated by the Belgian capital to 220.
The contracts for the light rail vehicles, which were signed in 2008, amount to US$235 million. For Bombardier Transportation, the latest sale points to the Brussels authorities’ satisfaction with the quality the delivered product. The purchase is aligned with STIB’s strategic objective of acquiring and operating, under competitive terms, a high-quality tramway system appreciated by users.
The trams will be manufactured in Bruges, Belgium, with the bogies being built in Siegen, Germany. Deliveries will be spread out between January 2013 and April 2015.
In 2007, Design Vlaanderen, a Belgian organization devoted to promoting good design, awarded its Henry van de Velde label to the FLEXITY Outlook tram, underlining the product’s innovativeness and authenticity. More than 1,500 FLEXITY vehicles are already in service around the world, particularly in Europe and Australia.
