Québec is taking part in the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity, which is being held in Nagoya, Japan from October 18-29, 2010. The event brings together 193 signatories of the 1992 Convention on the Protection of Biodiversity (also known as the Rio Convention). Québec is participating within the Canadian delegation.
During the conference, Diane Jean, Deputy Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, met with Hideki Minamikawa, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs within Japan’s Environment Ministry, to discuss Québec’s and Japan’s protected area management systems and measures to fight climate change.
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biodiversity was established in Montreal in 1996. The Convention, which stemmed from the first Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, has three main goals:
