Raymond Bachand, Minister of Finance and Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, recently announced that $3,458,000 will be provided over a three-year period to support 17 international research projects in the areas of healthcare, human and social sciences, nanotechnology, energy, high-tech materials, IT and communications, aeronautics/aerospace and climate change.
Co-financed by the Government of Québec, the research sector and various international partners, the projects involve $8,257,014 in research expenditures in Québec and $48,193,879 internationally, for a combined total of $56,450,893.
The projects in Québec will be carried out by researchers at McGill University, the Montréal Polytechnic Institute (EPM), the National Scientific Research Institute (INRS), Laval University, the University of Montréal, the School of Advanced Technology (ETS), the Sainte Justine Hospital Research Centre and the Sacré Coeur Hospital Research Centre. Collaborative efforts will be undertaken with partners in countries such as the US, France, Israel, Italy and Brazil. Four of these projects are major joint initiatives within the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program for Research and Technological Development.
The Québec government’s support is being provided under the program for international research and innovation initiatives, which is geared towards Québec-based companies, non-profit organizations operating in the research, innovation and science/technology distribution sectors, public research institutions and international research and education networks and consortiums. The program aims to boost the number of high-level international research and innovation partnerships in Québec’s strategic sectors and priority countries.
“This program is an excellent opportunity for Québec researchers to showcase their expertise around the world and to develop prestigious international partnerships,” said Mr. Bachand.
