The agri-food and pharmaceutical industries have long used water activity measurements to optimize the stability and storage of their products. A research team from French organization Irstea (National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture) has successfully adapted this technique for forest seeds and pollens with the goal of improving storage quality.
Since 2006, this method has been central to the bilateral scientific collaboration between France and Québec, more especially with the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune (MRNF). This collaboration is supported by the Commission permanente de coopération franco-québécoise.
The purpose of performing water activity measurements is to enable France and Québec to create seeds banks of reliable varieties to conserve biodiversity.
