Two years after the powerful earthquake that devastated Haiti, the Québec government and its partners – Hydro-Québec and Collaboration St.-Jean-sur-Richelieu-Haiti – today announced the construction of a 20 kW micro hydro power plant to provide basic services to the community of Labrousse in Haiti.

The hydroelectric project, valued at $750,000, is designed to improve the living conditions of the population in the region which is currently not connected to Haiti’s electric grid (EDH). The electrification of the area will allow health, education and agriculture projects to achieve their development objectives more easily.
It is part of a larger integrated development project in the Labrousse region piloted by FODES-5, the project’s Haitian partner, which works with a number of Québec international health, education, agriculture and economic development cooperation agencies, including the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation, UPA International Development, Land Without Borders and Collaboration santé internationale (international health collaboration).
Québec’s initiatives in Haiti
The Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities, Kathleen Weil, noted that Haiti has been the primary beneficiary of the Québec International Development Program (PQDI) since 1997. In addition, the Québec government has continued and intensified its initiatives in Haiti over the past two years by funding 14 new projects with a total budget of over $6.6M. More than a third of the funding comes from the PQDI.
