Québec’s Monsieur Lahzar nominated for Oscar

Monsieur Lahzar, a drama by Québec filmmaker Philippe Falardeau, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language film category.

Set in Montréal, it tells the gripping story of an Algerian immigrant who is hired as a replacement teacher after the original teacher commits suicide.

Produced by Luc Dery and Kim McCraw and adapted from Évelyne de la Chenelière's play Bashir Lazhar, Monsieur Lahzar also won the prize as best Canadian feature at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It’s the second year in a row that a Québec film has been nominated for the award, following Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies last year.

The Oscars will be handed out Feb. 26 in Hollywood.
