Québec adopts duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky

On May 24, 2016, the Québec Government Office announced that it will formally adopt duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky. The announcement was made by Delegate General Jean-Claude Lauzon during a visit to Louisville as part of the first “Québec-in-Kentucky Days,” a two-day event designed to strengthen the ties with the Commonwealth.

“Through this partnership, we are proud to support the development of the French program at DuPont Manual High School and thus contribute to the multi-cultural education of tomorrow’s citizen,” said Delegate General Lauzon.

“We are honored and excited about this new partnership and we look forward to collaborating with Québec,” said duPont Manual High School Principal Jerry Mayes.

“Manual has offered advanced language study in French for many years,“ added Denee Walsh, French Department Chair at duPont Manual High School. “This partnership and exchange will only strengthen our program by providing our students with opportunities to improve their communication skills and their cultural knowledge of Québec. Our students look forward to making new francophone friends.”

The initiative is part of the “Adopt a School” program launched in March 2015 by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), Permanent Representation to the United Nations, and the association Éducation en Français a New York (EFNY).

The partnership, the first with a high school, will include official visits and presentations by Québec representatives, and support for the organization of special events such as Journée internationale de la Francophonie or Québec Day.

In addition, duPont Manual High School will be paired with École Secondaire Jeanne-Mance in Drummondville, Québec. This pairing, which was facilitated by Drummondville Mayor Alexandre Cusson, will lead to joint activities such as regular web-based interactions to promote greater linguistic and cultural understanding.

Québec-in-Kentucky Days

During his visit to the Bluegrass State, Mr. Lauzon also met with Governor Matt Bevin to discuss potential areas for increased economic cooperation. He also met with officials in Lexington and Louisville and took part in a networking breakfast organized in collaboration with Greater Louisville Inc. and Kentucky World Trade Center as well as a roundtable discussion at Sullivan University on life sciences.
