General election: Parti québécois to form new Québec government

The Parti québécois headed by Pauline Marois will form the next Government of Québec after receiving 31.94% of the popular vote. Ms. Marois will be the first woman Premier of Québec. Her party will form a minority government after winning in 54 of Québec’s 125 ridings.

Elected to the Québec National Assembly for the first time in 1981, Ms. Marois has been in politics for over 26 years. In previous Parti québécois governments, she served as Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister of Finance and Minister of Research, Science and Technology. She has been Leader of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly since 2007.

Official Opposition
The Liberal Party of Québec, which has been in power since April 29, 2003, will now form the official opposition after receiving 31.21% of the popular vote. It will hold 50 seats in the National Assembly. The Head of the LPQ and outgoing Premier, Jean Charest, was defeated in the Sherbrooke riding.

Second opposition group
Facing the Parti québécois minority government, Coalition Avenir Québec will make up the second opposition group in the National Assembly. Headed by François Legault, Coalition Avenir Québec won in 19 of Québec’s 125 ridings.

Other party
With two seats, Québec solidaire will be the fourth party in the National Assembly. Its co-leaders, Françoise David and Amir Khadir, were elected in the Gouin and Mercier ridings, respectively

Events at the Métropolis
As she was ending her address to a gathering of supporters, the victory speech by the newly elected Premier of Québec, Pauline Marois, was brutally interrupted by an incident. Montréal police confirmed that one person had been killed and another seriously wounded. A man was arrested in connection with the shootings and will be brought to justice.

Quebecers firmly condemn all acts of violence and reject all threats, intimidation and other forms of extortion against anyone whomsoever. This isolated act is not worthy or representative of the values shared by the population of Québec.
