American Premiere of Gulîstan, Land of Roses at the Margaret Mead Film FestivalBrooklyn, NY Saturday, October 21, 2017
In the valleys of Kurdistan, many women have joined the PKK to defend their people against Daesh, the Turkish army or Iranian forces. Gulîstan, Land of Roses shows us the daily lives of these young fighters, including training, heated discussions and times of high alert.
The war is a threat at all times, but they keep laughing, living and being women, caring for their hair as well as their weapons. Filmmaker Zaynê Akyol takes us inside the close camaraderie of these warriors with nothing to lose, who generously share their political opinions, thirst for freedom and fierce feminism. A poignant, lovingly made film that gives us an unforgettable glimpse at the lives of women warriors.
