In another clear sign of Montréal’s leadership in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Inspired Minds, the global tech and science strategy group based in the UK, has announced that the World Summit AI Americas will be held in Montréal for at least three years (2019-2021), with a first edition on April 10-11. The event is expected to attract 6,000 participants over three years.
In the past few years, Montréal has become a global hub for research and excellence in AI. In order to reinforce Québec’s international leadership in this sector, the Government unveiled its strategy for the development of the Québec AI ecosystem in June of last year. This includes 12 recommendations to ensure the long-term sustainability of the artificial intelligence academic research centre, to develop talent in digital sciences to meet the needs of Québec, and to accelerate the development and adoption of AI solutions.
The inauguration of the new Mila Centre at the O Mile-Ex Complex is part of this strategy. Since January 2019, the O Mile-Ex Complex houses the talents of Mila, IVADO (Institute for Data Valorisation), many industrial laboratories, start-up companies and venture capital investors. This concentration of talent will promote the creation of a dynamic AI innovation ecosystem by fostering collaboration and stimulating innovation and technology transfer. The Mila, Québec Artificial Intelligence Institute, was set up in July 2017. Its mission covers the following four components: training, academic research, technology transfer, and social dialogue.
This dynamic scientific community coupled with the world’s largest concentration of academic researchers in AI, is most certainly one of the reasons why Montréal has recently attracted three AI leaders from the United Kingdom. QuantumBlack, WinningMinds and BIOS announced in December 2018, on the occasion of the prestigious NeurIPS conference, that they will all be opening R&D and excellence centres in Montréal, drawn by the impressive pool of talent that has made the city a leading hub of AI research. This major development stands to create more than 130 highly skilled jobs over the next three years. The teams of Invest Québec in London and Montreal, together with their partner Montreal International, worked closely with these three companies to strategically guide them through the process of setting up operations in Montreal.
When it comes to trade, the Québec Government Office in London has played an active role in ensuring Québec’s AI sector finds new markets in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Nordic Countries. Pursuant to this objective, in June 2019, we are organising a mission to London of Québec companies and researchers in AI. This mission will take place during the AI Summit in London organised in conjunction with London Tech Week, one of the biggest festivals for technology companies and innovators (including AI). Québec companies will have the opportunity to participate in this event as well as London Tech Week’s flagship event, TechXLR8. They will also meet potential partners in various technological fields. Invest Québec will also be attending the event with a presence at the Canadian Pavilion to present the competitive advantages of AI in Québec to investors looking at expanding their footprint in North America.
We are also thrilled to announce that Jean-Francois Gagné, Founder & CEO of Element AI, will be the Honorary Speaker of our Québec Annual Lecture 2019 event. Element AI has opened its European headquarters in London in 2018. The office focuses on AI for Good, and explores ways to use AI to help society.
