From the 28th November – 2nd December, the Québec Government Office in London welcomed Québec companies working in the life sciences sector to the UK on a trade mission to the Genesis conference.
Organized by One Nucleus, an international membership organisation for life science and healthcare companies, Genesis is London’s premier life sciences and healthcare networking conference. The Québec cohort, including representatives of businesses, research institutes and research commercialisation companies, constituted the largest ever Québec mission to visit Genesis. At the conference, delegates were able to participate in plenary seminars and B2B sessions.
The Delegation also organised a host of further activities. Participants partook in a welcome activity, with representatives from MedCity, the Department for International Trade and Life Sciences Hub Wales (who last year signed an MOU with Québec-based research cluster Sherbrooke Innopole) outlining the composition of the UK’s life sciences sector and the multiple opportunities for development and collaboration.
The mission programme, organised by the Québec Government Office in collaboration with the Ministère de l'Économie, de la Science et de l'Innovation, also entailed visits to two major life sciences hubs in Oxford and Cambridge. In Oxford, participants had the opportunity to network with key members of Oxford’s life sciences sector and visit the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, home of the Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. In Cambridge, participants were able to visit the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the largest centres for medical research in the world, to learn more about the opportunities for cooperation with British organisations.
Québec boasts a strong and dynamic life sciences and health technologies sector, ranking as one of the top 15 centres in North America, supporting 56,000 jobs and generating CAD$5.6 million in annual revenue. Several participants plan on returning to the UK next March to participate in BioWales, the flagship event for the life sciences sector in Wales and one of the UK’s leading life science conferences. Mission participants were as follows: Aligo Innovation s.e.c., the British-Québec Business Coalition, Génome Québec, IED3 Inc., IRIC, IRICoR, Reacts, Univalor and BCF LLP.
