Exhibition Flatland/Abstractions narratives #2
including works by Marie-Michelle Deschamps
Borrowing its title from a book written in 1884 by Edwin A. Abbott, where the leading characters are geometric forms, and the narrator, a Square, describes his discovery of a three-dimensional world, this group show deals with the way in which, from the 1960s on, artists have drawn inspiration from the formal abstract vocabularies which ran through the 20th century, infiltrating them with narratives.
By questioning the orthodox readings of abstraction which hold sway in art history, their activities involve fields as varied as literature, science-fiction, the history of the sciences, city-planning, and popular cultures, and apply different procedures for scripting forms such as encoding, hybridisation, and suggestion. In the wake of an initial show presented in 2016 at the Musée régional d’art contemporain in Sérignan, Flatland / Abstractions narratives #2 brings together some thirty artists from different generations.
