Close to 5,000 BIXI bikes have been rolling though the streets of London, England, since July 30. The Mayor of the British capital, Boris Johnson, launched the world’s latest BIXI franchise last Friday. London has opted for Montréal’s public bike-rental system on the heels of places like Boston, Melbourne and Minneapolis. The project means an investment of close to £140 million over a five-year period.
The winner of the 2010 Québec-Japan Award is Les Affaires journalist Martin Jolicoeur. The award will enable him to spend about ten days in Japan to prepare a series of reports on the development of the country’s aeronautics industry as well as on issues relating to it and its future prospects.

Eight young Montrealers who are passionate about the environment are currently on a five-week visit to Shanghai, China. $406,217 in financial support will allow 61 young Quebecers to take part in international solidarity fieldwork with Québec Without Borders in 2010-2011. The Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, Pierre Arcand, has announced that this fieldwork will take place in 6 countries in Latin America and the Antilles and one French-speaking African country.
Québec City had three days to win over the jury assigned to choosing the host city for the summer 2016 edition of the Universal Forum of Cultures. Québec is in the running against Amman, Jordan, and Cape Town, South Africa. The name of the host city will be announced this coming December during the closing ceremony at the Valparaiso Forum.

Approximately 1,000 representatives of civil society organizations from around the world will be attending the World Assembly of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, which will be held from August 20-23 in Montreal. The Government of Québec will be associated with this event, which is organized in partnership with the New World Institute (INM).
