Montréal has been voted the number-one city in North America for international event hosting, according to the official 2009 rankings recently issued by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
The ICCA represents the main international event organizers, including transportation and accommodation specialists. It comprises 900 member companies and organizations in 85 countries.
Montréal edged out a number of other leading US and Canadian cities, including New York, Boston, Washington, Vancouver and Toronto.
As the leading site for major international gatherings in Montréal, the Palais des congrès (Convention Centre) welcomes thousands of visitors each year. When asked to identify some of the key factors contributing to the venue’s success, CEO Marc Tremblay cited the flexibility of the facilities, the expert staff, the central location in downtown Montréal and the building design. Mr. Tremblay also paid tribute to Tourism Montréal’s efforts to attract large-scale events. Since it opened in 1983, the Palais has hosted more than 1,000 major conventions.
The Palais recently announced that it is among the finalists vying for the 2010 APEX Award for the world’s best convention centre. The winner will be announced in July by the International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC).
