How do you get to work? If it’s a commuter or subway rail, high-speed train, streetcar or even a plane, chances are it’s made by Bombardier. The CTA, the United States’ second-largest public transportation system, brokered a deal for 714 new rail cars from Bombardier’s 5000 Model Series in a contract valued at just under $1 Billion US ($964 Million). The new cars are in the process of being built and delivered, with more than 300 having already been put into service on the Green, Pink and Red Lines. Raymond Bachant, the president of Bombardier Transportation North America, commented on the deal between the Chicago Transit Authority and the Montréal giant: “We are proud to be a partner with CTA in providing modern, efficient and environmentally-friendly transportation to the citizens of Chicago. These orders illustrate the continued confidence CTA places in Bombardier and our products.”
These new rail cars feature a host of new-and-improved technologies such as alternating current propulsion, a technology that makes the trains more energy efficient and cheaper to maintain; an active suspension system that ensures easier boarding for passengers, higher rider capacity; and increased security and reliability.
Over seven billion people use Bombardier rapid transit cars every year, and the numbers continue to grow. Bombardier, though one of the world’s largest producers of rail technology, continues its commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability globally.
