The 2013 BIO Convention in Chicago ended on a high note for Québec on Thursday, April 25th. Through its slogan “Partner to Prosper,” the province made clear its efforts to encourage collaboration and partnerships in the pharmaceutical industry, in order to reflect the sector’s new business model. More than 170 Québecers attended the trade show this year, including professionals and researchers from the biopharmaceutical industry. Representatives from the Québec government participated in the show as well, led by Québec’s Minister of Finance and the Economy, Nicolas Marceau, and the province’s Chief Scientist, Rémi Quirion.
Alongside meetings that were held on site at the convention, Québec’s research and innovation team visited several Chicago institutions at the forefront of research in the life sciences. These included Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
Last but not least, the Québec Government Office in Chicago helped organize the “Rendez-vous Québec” evening reception on April 22nd at Terzo Piano, located within the Art Institute of Chicago. Representing countries from around the world, nearly 500 professionals, researchers, investors and other important individuals active in the biotechnology industry attended in order to network with representatives from Québec’s life sciences sector.
During his speech at Rendez-vous Québec, Minister Marceau announced the creation of a new initiative between the CQDM (Consorsium Québécois sur la découverte du médicament) and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC). The International Collaborative Industry Program (ICIP) is a concrete action to promote and facilitate the establishment of partnerships between Massachusetts and Quebec-based life sciences companies for research and development of new products and processes intended for commercialization. This international collaboration will build on existing strengths in Massachusetts and in Québec to increase innovation, productivity, investment and job creation in these two jurisdictions.
All in all, BIO 2013 was a successful event for Québec! Next year BIO will be in San Diego, California.
