“Planet Québecers” at South by Southwest (SXSW) returned home enchanted by their experience in Texas. The third year of this international showcase, which was held from March 8 to 17, was an occasion for productive discussions, promising meetings and the promotion of Québec culture and innovation.
A popular booth
The Planet Québec booth was extremely popular. A large interactive digital wall designed by Float4 Interactive captured the attention of thousands of visitors to the exhibitors’ area. Other Québec companies such as E-180, Lucion Media, nventive and pplconnect, also made a big splash with their breakthrough innovations.
Packed houses for Québec artists
This year, the Swan Dive bar and music emporium in Austin was transformed into Planet Québec headquarters where 35 emerging groups from the Québec musical scene strutted their stuff. Close to 15,000 tickets were sold for 11 showcases presented by Planet Québec with the support of the Festival d'été de Québec.
In the Film category, Québec director Vincent Morisset gave a presentation on creating films for computers to a standing room only crowd while the video Evil Twin, co-directed by Jean-Philippe Chartrand and Benjamin Mege, was a hit with film-makers and directors.
Planet Québec: shared success
The Planet Québec platform at SXSW was facilitated by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Ministère des Relations internationales, de la Francophonie et du Commerce extérieur, the Québec Government Office in Atlanta, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles, the Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
Two delegated organizations, M pour Montréal (Music) and Alliance numérique (Interactive Media), also took part in the adventure.
A number of private-sector partners also participated in the third edition of SXSW, including the Festival d'été de Québec, the casting team of the Cirque du Soleil, Montréal Festimania, Tourisme Montréal, Christie Digital and Greencopper.
Québec’s participation in international events such as SXSW reflects one of the government’s priorities—promoting Québec art, cultural products and creators beyond our borders in order to play a leading role in sectors in which it excels and contribute to the development of Québec society as a whole.
