The Quebec Delegation Chicago in conjunction with its partners Export Quebec, Développement PME Chaudière-Appalaches and the Presidents Council, sponsored Buying Days at the headquarters of two prominent Midwest-based hardware co-ops: Do It Best Corp. of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Ace International of Oak Brook, IL. In total, 18 Quebec manufacturers participated in the events.
The first meeting on November 28 at Do It Best Corp. was a precursor to the successes that would follow throughout the day. By 9:00 a.m., Jocelyn Desjarlais of DSD International shouted, “Success!” to the crowded room of vendors after he was invited to participate in the Do It Best private show for the co-op’s 4000 members; a rare achievement after only a 20 minute meeting with the Housewares buyer.
Ace International meetings the following day were equally rewarding with several companies being invited by the buyers to participate in private showcases for not only the 600 Ace International stores coming in from throughout the world but also for the more than 4000 U.S. stores that will also participate. One of the international buyers told event co-organizer Keith Kalinowski of the Quebec Delegation Chicago, “You are my best friend now, you just made my day!” The buyer was ecstatic with the innovative and quality products available from Quebec.
The Quebec participants returned home the evening of the 29th exhausted after three days of whirlwind visits, yet stimulated by the newfound opportunities. Not only did the manufacturers find new devotees in the Midwest, but by coming to Chicago, they will now be able to sell to international markets ranging from Dubai to Panama to Shanghai. All expressed an interest in working with the Quebec Delegation on future events to reach the world from the Midwest.
