Based in Santa Monica, California, the Milken Institute is one of the most influential think tanks in the western United States. Its President and CEO, Michael Klowden, was in Québec from January 19 to 21 to find out more about our economy and meet key players in the areas of economic development and research.
An economic research organization, the Milken Institute publishes reports and articles considered as definitive around the world. The Institute focuses on areas such as states’ competitiveness in the area of innovation and the costs and benefits of globalization. Among other documents, it publishes a highly respected yearly report called Best Performing Cities.
In Québec City, Michael Klowden met with Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie. The meeting was a chance for the Minister to tell his guest about the adoption of the Government of Québec’s strategy with respect to the United States. The current U.S. political and economic context and relations between Québec and the United States were also discussed. Mr. Klowden was invited by the Director General of the Conference of Montréal to attend the June 2010 edition of the annual event. In return, Mr. Klowden invited Minister Arcand to take part the annual Milken Institute Global Conference, to be held this April in Los Angeles under the theme “Shaping the Future.”
The program for Michael Klowden’s visit included meetings with leaders of large companies, government corporations and economic development organizations. Mr. Klowden also took part in a roundtable on research and innovation in life sciences, which was an opportunity to highlight Québec’s expertise in a sector of particular interest to the Milken Institute.
The visit was organized under the Government of Québec’s program for inviting and welcoming foreign personalities, which enables the creation of privileged relations and positions Québec as a strategic partner for influential players in the fields of the economy, politics, education and culture.
The wealthiest American state, California is one of the priority jurisdictions targeted by Québec government efforts south of the border. Québec has been represented in Los Angeles since 1970.
