Québec puppeteers will be front and centre at this year’s Titirijai Festival (International Puppet Festival) in Tolosa, Spain, to be held from November 28 to December 6. The 27th edition of the festival will be the inaugural event for Tolosa’s brand-new TO.PIC complex, one of the world’s largest puppet arts centres. Québec’s high-profile participation in the festival will wrap up a series of activities held to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Québec government office in Barcelona.
The official program for the Titirijai Festival includes performances by six Québec companies, illustrating the diversity and vitality of the Québec puppetry scene. Théâtre Sans Fil will open the festival with La corona del destino, and five other Québec productions will follow: La mujer foca (Théâtre Motus), Perseo (Théâtre de la Pire Espèce), Pekka (Théâtre des Petites Âmes), Juanito y el pobre diablo (Théâtre de Deux Mains) and Punzelle (Les Poupées [K]rinquées).
The Association québécoise des marionnettistes (AQM) will present a major, 400-square-metre exhibition created specially for the occasion, focusing on the work of pioneering and contemporary Québec companies and puppeteers.
Dubbed Fenêtre sur la marionnette du Québec, it will also include a lecture on Québec puppet theatre by AQM director Stéphane Guy and a talk on inspiration derived from other cultures by Hélène Ducharme, artistic director of Théâtre Motus, and André Viens, artistic director of Théâtre Sans Fil.
On top of all this, two Québec cuisine evenings prepared by chefs Erik Ayala-Bribiesca (Montréal) and Roberto Ruiz (Tolosa) will be held at the El Frontón restaurant.
Coordinated by the AQM, Fenêtre sur la marionnette du Québec has received financial support from the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine (MCCCF) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ). The Québec government office in Barcelona is pleased by Québec’s presence in the Basque Country, a region with a solid puppet tradition.
