Some 90 guest speakers and 500 participants from a dozen countries will be converging on Sherbrooke in June for the International Forum on Integrated Water Management. The Ministère des Relations internationales is associated with the event, which will be an opportunity for experts, economic stakeholders and political decision-makers to discuss water management issues in a setting conducive to the development of international partnerships.
Organized by the Conseil de gouvernance de l’eau des bassins versants de la rivière Saint-François (COGESAF) and the Centre universitaire de formation en environnement (CUFE, part of Université de Sherbrooke), the forum will be held from June 1 to 3, 2009. Québec’s Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, Line Beauchamp, has agreed to serve as honorary president, and the members of the honour committee include Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie.
The speakers and participants will focus on areas such as the impact of human activities and urbanization on watercourses and aquatic environments, forms of governance for managing water (particularly watershed management), rehabilitation projects around the world and the legal status of water. Transborder water management and managing water in a climate change context will also be covered by specific workshops.
The forum participants will include Ricardo Petrella, author of The Water Manifesto, and Jean-François Donzier, President of the International Network of Basin Organizations.
