The Centre d’études collégiales Baie-des-Chaleurs recently received a UNESCO-UNEVOC Centre Award. The Ministère des Relations internationales takes pride in the announcement of this distinction recognizing the contributions that have been made by an institution in Québec to further UNESCO’s educational development and technical and vocational training goals.
The Centre d’études collégiales Baie-des-Chaleurs is the only institution in Québec that is affiliated with the International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNEVOC). Operating under the auspices of UNESCO, the International Centre has nearly 240 members worldwide who share expertise in this education sector.
The Centre d’études collégiales Baie-des-Chaleurs, located in Carleton-sur-Mer, based its initiatives on UNESCO’s priorities to implement a teaching approach designed to stem the exodus of young people and dissuade them from dropping out of school – issues of major concern in the region. Training focuses on increasing academic motivation through activities such as hands-on learning projects and a mentoring program. In bestowing the award on the Centre d’études collégiales Baie-des-Chaleurs, UNESCO-UNEVOC acknowledges the innovative approach this Québec institution has adopted and holds it up as an example to other members in the international network.
During the award presentation, MNA for Bonaventure, Deputy Premier and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Regions and Land Occupancy, Nathalie Normandeau, stated that the distinction demonstrates Québec society’s expertise and interest in responding to the great challenges facing UNESCO in the area of education, as well as in the cultural, scientific and communication sectors. The Deputy Premier also stressed that Québec’s vitality and commitment with regard to these issues were bolstered by the Agreement between the Government of Québec and the Government of Canada concerning UNESCO and the appointment of a Québec government representative within Canada’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO.
