Recently elected Vermont Governor Phil Scott traveled to Québec City this week with members of his senior staff and cabinet for his first international trip as Governor. Gov. Scott and his team met with Premier Philippe Couillard, members of his Cabinet, and a number of business and industry groups seeking to highlight the strong collaboration between Québec and Vermont and their shared vision to strengthen the two States’ economies through trade, innovation and cooperation.
Québec and Vermont determined to strengthen their cooperative ties
During his first international visit since his inauguration in January, the Governor of Vermont, Phil Scott met with the Premier of Québec, Philippe Couillard. During their meeting, Governor Scott and Premier Couillard expressed their firm commitment to reinforcing the special ties that exist between the two territories, especially commercial ties.
Premier Couillard and Governor Scott agreed to work together to broaden economic relations between Québec and Vermont, particularly by promoting trade integration on both sides of the border.
Premier Couillard and Governor Scott said that they would task their respective administrations with further improving the Québec-Vermont multi-sectorial cooperation agreement. To this end, they will be setting their sights on a new area of cooperation, student mobility, with the aim of enriching educational opportunities and employability for students in vocational training and university programs.
The Governor was accompanied by a large delegation, including secretaries Michael Schirling, Julie Moore, and Joe Flynn, responsible for commerce, natural resources, and transportation, respectively.
The Vermont delegation’s agenda includes a number of sectorial meetings that took place yesterday and today between the Secretaries accompanying the Governor and their respective Québec counterparts including Minister of Public Safety, Martin Coiteux, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Pierre Arcand, and the Minister of Economy, Science, and Innovation, Dominique Anglade. Cross-border cooperation in the areas of security, hydroelectricity exports, and trade relations will be among the topics for discussion.
“By choosing Québec for his first foreign mission, Governor Scott has shown that he wishes to continue the long and mutually beneficial tradition of cooperation and trade that links Québec and Vermont. Vermont is an invaluable ally in implementing the action plan our government has put in place to promote the advantages of economic interdependence between Québec and the United States.”
Philippe Couillard, Premier of Québec
“A strong collaboration and partnership with Quebec is essential to strengthening Vermont’s economy, security and environment, so it was important to visit the province early in my term, along with members of my team, to meet my counterpart and discuss how we can work together in support of shared goals.”
