The City of Biotechnology and Human Health of Metropolitan Montréal (Biotech City) on May 2nd and 3rd will mark its 10th anniversary with a two-day international symposium focused on the latest innovations in life sciences in terms of R&D, regulations, new technologies, business strategies and funding models. This event will bring together more than 400 delegates from academia, the biotech & pharma industries, business management, financial and regulatory agencies.
The Québec Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Exports (MDEIE) in collaboration with the Québec Delegation in Atlanta, organized a trade mission to Texas from January 30 – February 3 in order to develop business ties with the fastest growing State in the Union. The nine companies that made up the Québec contingent had the opportunity to introduce innovative products and services to the different department heads in the municipalities of Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Galveston, as well as to potential private partners.
On May 23 – 25, Montréal will hold the first edition of C2-MTL (Commerce and Creativity Montréal) a major business conference where innovators from all industrial sectors will gather for non-traditional experiences showcasing the value of using both the left and right sides of our brains to optimize thinking potential and creativity – specifically in business.
This year’s edition of the Atlanta Francophonie Festival will be marked once again by strong support and involvement from Québec. The Québec Government Office, along with the Belgian, French, Canadian and Swiss consulates, will team up with the French Alliance of Atlanta and other francophone organizations to celebrate the francophone culture.
The International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF), the French-speaking world’s international organ mandated to foster solidarity between its 75 member states and governments, chose the city of Québec as host to the next World Forum of the French Language, to be held from July 2 – 6, 2012.
8 November 2010 – St-Laurent, Quebec, Canada - Mannarino Systems & Software (MSS) announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (LM Aero) in which LM Aero will provide investment funding to propel MSS’ business growth. This funding is being provided to support MSS’ planned growth as a provider of systems and software engineering services and products. This MOA is in support of Lockheed Martin Corporation’s obligation to the Government of Canada under the Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) Program.

Quebec’s international exports are forecast to grow by another 7 per cent in 2012 after an estimated 4 per cent gain in 2011, according to a Global Export Forecast by Export Development Canada (EDC).
Quebec-based Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) has received the Environmental Strategy of the Year Award and the Promotional Campaign of the Year - Environmental Message Award at the Pulp and Paper International (PPI) Awards 2011 ceremony held in Brussels on November 15.
The government of Québec and Alcoa Canada (NYSE :AA) entered into an agreement calling for a $2.1 B investment plan from the latter for its Québec smelters. The company will also provide $50 M into the Fonds de développement économique (Economic Development Fund) and create a $25 M Sustainable Development Fund that will benefit the regions of Baie-Comeau, Bécancour and Deschambault, where its smelters are located.
During the last quarter, Québec was the province which benefited from the most venture capital investments in Canada according to Thomson Reuters. Indeed, 145 million dollars were invested in startup or growing companies, which represents an 81-percent increase from last quarter and 37% of the venture capital investments in Canada.

Montréal-based Bombardier Inc., on October 26, received the prestigious “Tell Award”, which rewards the most significant technology project of the year in Switzerland. It was awarded to Bombardier Inc. in recognition of its product development for BOMBARDIER TWINDEXX Swiss Express intercity trains and the BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system.
Enerkem Inc., a waste-to-biofuels and chemicals company headquartered in Montréal, was ranked 7th in Biofuels Digest's annual list of the 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy 2011-2012, which recognizes innovation and achievement in bioenergy development. For the past three years, Enerkem has steadily climbed this prestigious ranking from the 25th position in 2009, 16th in 2010, and 7th this year.
Charles-Philippe David, who holds the Raoul Dandurand Chair of Strategic and Diplomatic Studies and professor of political science at Université du Québec à Montréal, gave a conference talk on October 21st at the Center for Transportation Research (CTR), a research institution that is part of the Cokrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas in Austin.
Seventeen prêt-à-porter manufacturers from Québec participated in the highly anticipated Montréal Collections fashion show at AmericasMart on October 14th. More than 400 reps and buyers from specialty apparel boutiques and retail chains in the Southern United States attended the show highlighting the spring 2012 collections. It was Montréal Collections’ 11th annual participation in this major event.
“@nime ta francophonie” is a contest organised by the Quebec-based Centre de la francophonie des Amériques. It encourages teachers and professors from all academic levels to promote French culture and its language in the Americas by designing an educational project in French.
